Alia Atkinson ranked sixth in FINA/Swimming World Cup Series

Jamaica’s Olympian Alia Atkinson is now ranked sixth on the overall standings after the latest stop on the FINA/Swimming World Cup Series in Japan.

Atkinson who claimed gold in the women’s 50metres breaststroke, in Tokyo yesterday, has now accumulated 134 points. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden leads the table with 285 points, Kantinka Hossu of Hungary sits second with 270 points, with the Russian Yulia Effimova third with 234 points.

In winning the 50metres breast stroke event Atkinson touched the wall in 28.95 seconds, just ahead of Russian rival Yuliya Efimova who was second in 29.56 seconds.  Australia’s Emily Seebohm finished third in 29.99 seconds.

The win was the second for Atkinson the short course world record holder, who also triumphed over Efimova on the previous day after claiming the 100metres breaststroke gold in 1 minute 03.09 seconds.

The final event of the seven-meet series is scheduled to take place in Singapore between November 15-17.
