Alia Atkinson smashes world record at FINA World Cup

Alia Atkinson was in world record form on her way to victory in the women’s 50m breaststroke on third and final day at the 2018 FINA World Cup in Budapest on Saturday.

The 29 year old shattered her old record of 28.64 seconds – which she set in Tokyo on October 26, 2016 – when she sped to victory in 28.56 seconds to upstage Russia’s Yuliya Effimova who was second in 29.22s for the second time in two days.

Atkinson was the fastest in the preliminaries earlier where she posted a time of 29.70 seconds

on Friday Atkinson produced one of the biggest upsets when she took down the Russian on her way to winning gold in the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:02.80s.
