Double world record holder Alia Atkinson turned in a sensational performance this morning to book her place in tomorrow’s final of the 14th edition of the FINA Short-course Swimming championship in Hangzhou, China.
The birthday girl Atkinson won semi-final one of the women’s 50 meters Brea stroke to record the fastest time in the eliminator as she posted 29.54 seconds just outside her own world record in the event, as second place went to Jenna Laukanen of Finland who touched the wall in 29.83 seconds .
Another qualifier for the final was Martina Carara of Italy who posted 29.79 seconds to win semi-final 2.
Earlier Atkinson opened up in the heats with the third fastest time overall last night in the opening session in 30 seconds flat.
The Jamaican is also down to compete in the women 100 metre breaststroke which gets underway on Thursday at 8:30pm Jamaica time.
In the meantime another Jamaican at the championships Sidrell Williams will line up in the men’s 50 and 100 metre freestyle events.
Williams will make his competition debut in the men’s 50 metre freestyle heats at 8:30pm tomorrow.
