Alia Atkinson wins 50 metres event at Fina/Airweave Swimming World Cup

Jamaica’s world record holder Alia Atkinson opened her 2017-2018 Fina/Airweave Swimming world Cup Season by winning the 50 metre breaststroke in Moscow Russia last night.

Atkinson captured the event in a time of 29.46 seconds finishing ahead of Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte who touched the wall for the silver medal in 29.51 seconds.

Russian Natalia Ivaneeva won the bronze in a time of 29.87 seconds.

The victory was the 25th of Atkinson’s career including 8 straight in the event last year

In her final race of the day Alia competed in a stacked final of the 100metre individual medley and she placed fourth in a time of 59.55 coming from 8th at the halfway mark.

The race would go to the world record holder in the event Katinka Hosszu of Hungary in a time of 57.02. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom won the silver in 54.61 with former world record holder Australian, Emily Seebohm winning the bronze in 58.63.

Meanwhile on day two Alia will again be in action in two events;
