Andre Russell powers Windies to series win over Sri Lanka

by March 6th, 2020

West Indies, led by a whirlwind knock by the explosive Andre Russell, beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets to wrap-up a whitewash in the two-match T20 International Series.

Chasing a victory target of 156, the Windies raced to 158 for 3 in 17th over led by Russell who smote six sixes in only 14 balls on his way to a blistering 40 not out that put a successful chase of 156 beyond doubt for the Caribbean side in the final match of the series at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

A workmanlike 43 not out from Shimron Hetmyer was the top score for West Indies and Brandon King hit a career-best 43 to lay the groundwork, but it was Russell’s hitting that swung the game decisively for the visitors.

Russell formalised the result with 18 balls remaining, when he smashed a short ball from Angelo Matthews deep into the crowd at mid-wicket for six.

The result followed a 25-run victory for the Caribbean in the first T20I two days ago at the same venue and gave Kieron Pollard his first T20I series victory since replacing Carlos Brathwaite in the post of captain last September.

Earlier the Sri Lankans, who were asked to take first strike, posted a modest 155 for 6 in their 20 overs with Dasun Shanaka top-scoring with 31.

Fabian Allen (2-24) was the pick of the Windies bowlers while there was one each for Oshane Thomas, Sheldon Cottrell and Dwayne Bravo.

Summarised scores:

SRI LANKA 155 for six off 20 overs (Dasun Shanaka 31 not out, Angelo Matthews 23, Thisara Perera 21 not out; Fabian Allen 2-24).

WEST INDIES 158 for three off 17 overs (Shimron Hetmyer 43 not out, Brandon King 43, Andre Russell 40 not out).
