At least four Bulgarian football fans arrested over the racist abuse of England players

At least four Bulgarian football fans have been arrested over the racist abuse of England players during Monday’s Euro 2020 qualifier.

Police tracked down supporters accused of targeting black England players during the match in Sofia. The game had to be stopped twice during the first half as players endured vile racist chanting from some home fans.

England went on to win 6-nil and UEFA announced it had opened disciplinary proceedings against Bulgaria. The Bulgarian Interior Ministry released a picture showing four people arrested over alleged racist behaviour at the England and Bulgaria match.

Police in the country are now hunting for more fans involved in the disgraceful scenes on Monday night, according to Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) Raids saw four arrests and a picture shows suspects lined up against a wall.

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Interior confirmed it had detained four fans, adding: ‘work is still ongoing to identify others.’ BNR has reported the number of supporters detained is five.

During the game at the Vasil Levski National Stadium, some Bulgarian fans wearing masks held up ‘No Respect’ T-shirts and made Nazi salutes.

There were also jeers and chants directed at England players, including Tyrone Mings and Raheem Sterling.
