Brace for fall off in tomato production

by October 22nd, 2018

There could be a fall-off in tomato production in St. Elizabeth, with plants showing signs of fungal and bacterial diseases, associated with the increase in rainfall.

Now that the drought is over, and the rains have set in, tomato and sweet pepper farmers are being told, to monitor their fields closely, to prevent reduced production.

The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) says based on investigations and field monitoring by officers, some tomato fields have showed signs of being affected, within the last two weeks.

Rada Parish Manager for St. Elizabeth Nathan Samuels is hopeful that there will not be a drastic dip in tomato production, based on quantities planted.

Mr. Samuels says to combat fungal and bacterial diseases, farmers should take keen note of any physical changes in leaves, to include spotting or yellowing, or wilting of plants.

He says farmers should employ good agricultural practices.
