by December 20th, 2017

The West Indies, despite a maiden half century by Rovman Powell, went down by five-wickets in the first One-Day International against New Zealand in Whangarei.

Powell staged a stirring rear-guard action while hitting 59 off 50 balls which included 2 fours and 4 sixes as the Windies ended on 248 for 9 after being put to bat.

Evin Lewis was the pick of the visiting batsmen with a classy 76 while sharing in a 3rd wicket partnership of 62 with debutant Shimron Hetmyer who made 29.

Doug Bracewell, named Man of the Match, claimed 4 for 55, Todd Astle picked up 3 for 33 and Lockie Ferguson 2 for 49.

The Black Caps in reply made 249 for 5 to overhaul the target with four overs remaining, riding on solid contributions from the top order.

Opening batsmen George Worker (57) and Colin Munro (49) laid the foundation for the home side’s chase with a 108-run partnership.

The loss leaves Windies yet to register a win on its New Zealand tour after a 2-0 sweep in the Test series.

Windies has not won an ODI series in New Zealand since 1995, and in 2017, the team has won only three of the 17 ODIs it has played.

The next fixture in this series is in Christchurch on Saturday. Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, and Tim Southee will both be rested for the second and third ODIs.
