Brazil advance to World Cup quarterfinals after beating Mexico

Five time winners Brazil are through to the quarterfinals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia after easily dispatching Concacaf giants Mexico 2-0 in their round of 16 tie at the Samara Arena.

The first 20 minutes of the match started with El Tri pressuring the South Americans’ back-line, but eventually Tite’s side were able to grow into the game, ultimately generating more goalscoring opportunities and looking the likelier to break the deadlock.

It took until after the break, though, and once the second half commenced, it wasn’t long until Neymar was wheeling away in celebration. He slid in to finish from close range after Willian sent in a dangerous, low cross on 51 minutes.

Brazil continued to create scoring chances and, with full-time closing in fast, substitute Roberto Firmino tapped in at the back post, just 2 minutes after coming on, as Neymar turning provider to seal victory.

Brazil now await the winner of match between Belgium and Japan at the Rostov Arena at Rostov-On-Don.

Neymar in the meantime has attempted the most shots (23) and shots on target (12), as well as creating the most goal-scoring chances for his teammates (16) and suffering the most fouls (23) at the 2018 world cup.

Mexico have now been eliminated from the World Cup at the last 16 stage in each of the last seven tournaments (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 & 2018).
