Broadcasting Commission clamps down on material promoting illegal activity such as drug use and scamming

by October 11th, 2022

The Broadcasting Commission has issued a directive to broadcasters to take immediate steps to prevent the transmission of any recorded material that promotes or glorifies illegal activity, including drug use and scamming.

In a statement today (October 11), the Commission says the transmission of any media content or speech, which promotes and/or glorifies scamming, illegal use or abuse of drugs, illegal or harmful use of guns, or other offensive weapons, “jungle justice” or any other form of illegal or criminal activity, must be halted immediately.

This new requirement also includes any edited song, which directly or indirectly promotes such activities.

Executive Director of the Commission, Cordel Green says while content regulation must always have regard for the right to freedom of expression, any context in which criminality is presented through music or videos as normal behaviour, conflicts with the tenets of responsible broadcasting.
