Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says he has submitted the report from the West Kingston Compensation Committee to Cabinet.

The committee, chaired by Retired President of the Court of Appeal Justice Seymour Panton, was set up to investigate and determine claims filed by persons impacted by the joint police-military operations in West Kingston in May 2010.

Cabinet is to review the report and determine what action government will take in regards to the claims.

The report will be tabled in Parliament next month.

Mr. Chuck says the committee indicated that over one thousand claims from residents were examined.

However, about 400 new claims collected by the office of the public defender will not be considered, because they were submitted after a second deadline had passed.

Speaking at a Rotary Club event earlier today (Oct 12) Mr. Chuck noted that the compensation committee’s report could prompt government to adhere to recommendations made by the West Kingston Commission of Enquiry.

The enquiry heard testimonies of residents who were detained for several days during the operations, as well as from those whose homes and other properties were damaged.
