CAPI concerned over beatings in police lock up

by September 2nd, 2015

Lobby group Citizens Action for Principle and Integrity CAPI has expressed alarm at the number of suspects beaten while in police custody in connection with police related killings.

The latest incident involved Gratiano Green, the suspect charged for the slaying of Constable Lynden Barrett, who was reportedly beaten by other inmates forcing him to have to seek medical attention.

In July, the suspect in the killing of Constable Crystal Thomas succumbed to injuries he received while in custody at the Hunts Bay Police Station.

CAPI’S co-convenor Dennis Meadows says the two incidents are more than a coincidence and give rise to questions as to the role of the police personnel in protecting those who are in custody.

Mr Meadows states that despite the revised lock-up administration policy being implemented little has changed since the fatal beating of Mario Dean at the Barnett Street lock up in St James last year.

He has called on police commissioner Dr Carl Williams to resign in light of what he described as the commissioner’s failure to protect those who are held in police lock up.

Mr Meadows adds that there must be a measure of accountability on the part of the police high command.
