Carib Cement workers protest; prevent access to Logos Hope book ship

by May 26th, 2017

Up to news time, a meeting was still underway at Caribbean Cement Company in Kingston, following a protest by workers at the Rockfort plant earlier today (May 26) over wage negotiations.

The meeting involves the management of Caribbean Cement Company, representatives of the Labour Ministry and the National Workers Union (NWU) which represents the workers.

Public Relations Manager at Caribbean Cement Company Limited Sophia Lowe Pinnock says the workers are continuing their protest.

It’s not clear when they will resume normal duties.

In a statement, Carib Cement says it is in negotiations with the NWU, to reach a new collective labour agreement.

The company says, it is acutely aware of the importance of returning to normality, and will be working through the approved channels to achieve this in the shortest possible time.

Meantime, today’s protest by workers hampered visitor access to the book ship, Logos Hope.

The ship is docked at the Rockfort pier, and its reported that the gates were closed today by angry Carib Cement workers.

In a statement, the Logos Hope says, the ship is closed to the public until further notice.

This is due to industrial unrest among staff of the Caribbean Cement company, which began this morning, and it is not known how long the unrest will continue.

The world’s largest floating book fair arrived in Kingston on May 12 and is scheduled to remain at the pier at Rockfort, Kingston, until June 11.

Logos expressed hope that the situation at Caribbean Cement Company will be resolved soon, to the satisfaction of all concerned, so that the ship can reopen to the public.
