Children’s Advocacy group demands that the contents of the Sex Offender Registry be made accessible to the Jamaican public

by October 18th, 2021

Children’s Advocacy group Hear the Children’s Cry is again demanding that the government make the contents of the Sex Offender Registry accessible to the Jamaican public, immediately.

The renewed call follows the recent abduction of two children in Bath, St. Thomas, days apart.

The two young girls have been found alive.

Founder of Hear the Children’s Cry Betty Ann Blaine says the Sex Offender Registry established in July 2014, is managed by the Department of Correctional Services but the names, addresses and other important details it contains about convicted sex offenders, are available to only a few groups, including the police.

She says parents, families and the general public do not have access to the information on convicted sexual offenders.

Mrs. Blaine points out that the abduction of not one but two children, believed to be by the same man, illustrates the critical need for public access to this registry, as well as increased alertness by families and communities in the interest of keeping children safe.

In the meantime, she is urging all parents, family and community members to recognize the need for heightened vigilance in protecting the nation’s children.
