Community launches its own crime fighting initiative

by July 5th, 2018

One concerned Jamaican citizen has mobilized members of his community to form the Citizens Action Against Crime (CAAC) to prevent and address crime and violence in the nation.

Randy Finnikin, who has more than 30 years’ experience in implementing social intervention programmes and community transformation initiatives, started the group in Old Harbour six months ago.

Mr. Finnikin says the group which has about 140 members was launched via social media and is now being piloted in old harbour with the intention for it to be extended island-wide.

So far, the Citizens Action Against Crime has embarked on promoting safety and security initiatives including neighbourhood, town and farm watches, and the promotion and installation of CCTV cameras in public places to be piloted in old harbour.

The founder says he believes that safe communities can only be made possible through networks and collaboration.

He says that the community has been showing support for the group and the work it has been doing.
