Cop accidentally shot by colleague while on operation

A male police constable attached to the Buff Bay police station in Portland has been hospitalised in critical condition, after he was accidentally shot while on an operation this morning (Jan 13).

It’s reported that the constable was wounded in the head.

Meantime, commanding officer for Area 2, ACP Elbert Nelson said, based on initial reports the policeman was with a team carrying out an operation in the Olivere Housing Scheme, in Buff Bay.

Reports are that about 5:45 a.m. a team of police officers was searching a premises, when the bullet from the gun of a policeman, ricocheted and hit another cop.

The wounded officer was rushed to the Port Antonio hospital then air lifted to the Kingston public hospital.

ACP Nelson said he expects that following a debriefing for details of the incident, further measures will be implemented regarding safety during police operations.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) and the Inspectorate of Constabulary have launched investigations into the incident.
