Cops challenged to “put Indecom out of business”

by May 16th, 2018

Chairman of the Police Federation Sergeant Cecil McCalla has challenged rank and file members of the force to work together put the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) out of business.

He says this must be done by members being professional in the execution of their duties.

Indecom investigates actions by members of the security forces and other agents of the state that result in death or injury to persons or the abuse of the rights of persons, and for connected matters.

Concerns have been expressed by members of the force about how Indecom deals with officers who are being investigated.

A recent court ruling says the agency can only investigate but has no authority to charge officers.

Sergeant McCalla told police delegates at their annual conference this morning (May 16) that the members are not against oversight.

Meantime, Sergeant McCalla says the government should fund the Federation’s legal bills as Indecom challenges the court’s ruling on its ability to prosecute police officers.

He was addressing delegates at the 75th Annual Joint Central Conferences of the Jamaica Police Federation underway at the Moon Palace Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios St. Ann this morning.
