Country placed on high alert for influenza

by February 12th, 2019

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has put the country on high alert for an influenza outbreak.

This as health facilities report an increase in the number of cases of fever and respiratory illnesses.

Parishes with a noted increase are: Kingston and St. Andrew, Trelawny, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth and Portland.

Speaking in parliament this afternoon (Feb 12) Dr. Tufton said adequate supplies of flu vaccine were bought last year and distributed, targeting vulnerable groups such as health care workers and pregnant women.

He said the increase in influenza cases, has triggered the ministry’s alert and response system, which includes a public education campaign.

Dr. Tufton appealed to persons visiting health facilities for treatment, to be patient, as more cases have resulted in longer wait times.
