Court Management Services to develop security plan in wake of bomb threats

by September 18th, 2018

The Court Management Services is reporting that it’s in dialogue with the Ministries of National Security and Justice to develop a comprehensive security plan for the island’s courts.

The announcement follows the fourth report of a bomb threat at one of the island’s court houses today (Sep 18).

Cases being heard at the St. Catherine parish court were disrupted this morning, after a bomb scare at the facility.

The Court Management Services say it was informed of the threat by the police, who ordered that the court be evacuated around 10:00 a.m.

Following checks by the police, clearance was given for persons to return to the building around midday.

The Corporate Communications Unit of the police says nothing unusual was found by the police during their checks of the building. The court resumed operations at 2:00 p.m.

Senior Communications Officer at the Court Management Services Kadiesh Fletcher, says the entity is concerned about the threats and is engaged in talks about enhanced security.

Miss Fletcher says the court management services remains committed to its duties despite the constant threats.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has said court buildings will be retrofitted with state of the art video cameras, as part of efforts to make them safer for those who use these facilities.

The move to install video cameras at courthouses comes as a direct response to recent bomb threats that disrupted court proceedings.

Meanwhile, the President of the Jamaican Bar Association is expressing concern about the established procedures of the Jamaica Constabulary Force as it relates to bomb threats and evacuations.

Jacqueline Cummings questioned whether or not the authorities had a game plan in place to safely remove people from buildings under threat.

In the meantime, Ms. Cummings says she is dismayed that persons creating public mischief continue to disrupt the activities of the court.
