Daddy U-Roy crowned

After 58-years in the entertainment industry, legendary toaster and deejay Daddy U-Roy was crowned King of Deejays by Irish and Chin in Queens New York on Friday.

Renowned for his phrase “Wake The Town and Tell The People” Daddy U-Roy was crowned by Grammy Award-winning deejay Shabba Ranks.

The outpouring of love and support left 78-year-old Daddy U-Roy with tears streaming down his face.

Garfield Chin Bourne, CEO of Irish and Chin & Soundchat Radio, who is the founder of the event, said U-Roy and other pioneers should be honoured while they are still alive.

Other industry professionals who were present for the historic musical moment were Bushman, David Rodigan, and Rory of Stone Love.

Spragga Benz, and Chronixx are among the slew of entertainers and industry players who have expressed their support and approval of Daddy U-Roy’s crowning via social media platforms.

Born Ewart Beckford in Jones Town, U Roy has been awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican government for his pioneering musical exploits. His Stur Gav sound system still rocks dancehalls worldwide and was responsible for the rise of deejays Super Cat, Josey Wales, and Charlie Chaplin among others.
