Dancehall fans react to Billboard’s first-ever US chart for Afrobeats

by March 28th, 2022

Some Dancehall fans are expressing mixed views across social media platforms following news that Billboard will officially launch the first-ever US chart for Afrobeats Songs tomorrow

Last week, the magazine said it joined forces with the music festival and global Afrobeats brand, Afro Nation for the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart that will go live on Billboard.com on Tuesday, March 29.

On Instagram, one social media user said, “Afrobeat is a bigger market with more diversity coming out of Africa than Jamaica.” Another shared, “Until we have a business structure within our Reggae/Dancehall industry, things of this nature will always happen.” While another asked, “Will this affect Dancehall?” Another wrote, “No worries, Trap Dancehall will soon get its own chart.”

The announcement of the first-ever US chart for Afrobeats Songs comes two years after Billboard discontinued its Reggae Digital Song Sales chart.

Meanwhile, the new Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart will rank the 50 most popular Afrobeats songs in the country based on a weighted formula incorporating official streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of leading audio and video music services, plus download sales from top music retailers.

With the likes of Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Tems, and Davido, Afrobeats have become more popular in the United States.
