Delay in naming new Police Commissioner

by April 6th, 2017

There is indication that there will be a delay in the naming of the new Police Commissioner.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Novelette Grant has been acting in the position since January 7 and is occupying the post for 90 days, which expires today (Apl 6).

She took over the reins after the resignation of Dr. Carl Williams.

Miss Grant and Assistant Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey are among a number of senior officers who have applied for the post of Police Commissioner.

The police services commission headed by Professor Gordon Shirley has not given any public timeline for when the country will hear who will run the constabulary.

Irie FM News asked Professor Shirley about what to expect, he only indicated that the process may take a little longer than expected.

Meantime, National Security Minister Robert Montague says he too is awaiting the announcement of the new police commissioner.

Mr. Montague says by law he cannot interfere in the process.

In January, the National Security Minister indicated that the new commissioner would be on contract which will have a performance agreement that will clearly outline outcomes, timelines, the targets and expectations.

He said the new commissioner in applying must have a plan, as to how the Jamaica Constabulary Force will be managed, transformed and be accountable.
