Despite decrease in Covid reproductive rate, Jamaica still faces potential fourth wave due to low vaccination rate

Despite a decrease in the Covid-19 reproductive rate, Jamaica still faces a potential fourth wave of the pandemic due to the country’s low vaccination rate.

Speaking at yesterday’s (December 15) Covid-19 Conversations press briefing, National Epidemiologist Dr. Karen Webster Kerr said there has been a decrease in community cases in the last two weeks.

She said this represents a decrease of over 50 per cent in comparison to previous weeks.

However, she said the vaccination level is too low to have an effect on transmission.

Dr. Webster Kerr said from March to December 14, almost 100 percent of Covid-19 deaths were unvaccinated people.

She noted that, only 26-point-five per cent of the population has received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, to date.
