by May 20th, 2019

The daughter of 80’s deejay Billy Boyo is seeking her father’s royalties after his song was sampled by Dj Khaled on his album, Father of Asahd.

Billy Boyo’s “One Spliff a Day” was sampled on Khaled’s title track, “Holy Mountain” which features Buju Banton, Sizzla, Mavado, and 070 Shake who belts out the hook.

Billy Jean, the daughter of Billy Boyo, took to social media to share her concerns.

Dj Khaled on the other hand, clearly did his research as both Billy Boyo and Henry “Junjo” Lawes are both credited as composers and lyricists on “Holy Mountain”.

When Music News contacted VP Records, a representative explained that VP owns the Master Rights to Billy Boyo’s best known single, “One Spliff a Day”. The rep who was hesitant about being recorded further stated that Dj Khaled was given permission to use the track.

So, is this a non-issue? What’s in it for Billy Boyo’s daughter, Billy Jean? Where are the royalty payments for Boyo’s publishing rights? Who has been commissioned to handle Boyo’s estate? And does Billy Boyo have an estate?

Keep it locked to Music News for more.

In addition to “One Spliff a Day,” Billy Boyo also charted in 1982 with the Henry Junjo Lawes-produced single, “Wicked She Wicked” at age 13.

Billy Boyo died of a brain tumour on October 29, 2000, after a two-month-long battle with the disease.
