International Dancehall star Shaggy is expressing gratitude after being conferred with an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree on Saturday (May 28) from Brown University, one of the leading Ivy League research universities in the United States.

Dr. Orville “Shaggy” Burrell shared a video snippet from the ceremony on his verified Instagram account, which he captioned, “What an honor #brown #doctoroffinearts #gratitude #givethanks.”

Dancehall entertainers Spice, Ding Dong, Tarrus Riley, Omi, Mr. Lexx, Ishawna, and Gramps Morgan are among the many social media users congratulating Shaggy on his historic achievement.

Not only a pioneering diamond-selling dancehall artist, but Shaggy also served four years in the U.S. Marines, including two tours of duty in the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Storm.

Brown University awarded a total of nine honorary doctorates including U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and several other candidates who have achieved great distinction in a variety of fields.

A Brown tradition since 1769, the annual presentation of honorary degrees offers the community the chance to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of leaders from different backgrounds.
