Easy first round passage for Roger Federer and Serena Williams in first round of Australian Open

by January 10th, 2019

Roger Federer’s bid for a third successive Australian Open title will begin against world number 99 Denis Istomin, while top seed Novak Djokovic will face a qualifier in the first round.

The draw for the first grand slam of the year which serves off on Monday took place this morning, where the likes of Federer, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal all learned what their potential path to the trophy would look like.

Should Djokovic, a six-time winner at Melbourne Park, beat an as-yet-unknown qualifier, he could face wildcard Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next match, with Denis Shapovalov a possible third-round opponent and Kei Nishikori potentially awaiting in the quarter-final.

Nadal will meet Australian wildcard James Duckworth in his opening clash, with Kevin Anderson, John Isner and Grigor Dimitrov all in his quarter of the draw.

Marin Cilic, who lost last year’s final to Federer, will begin his 2019 campaign against home favourite Bernard Tomic.

Meanwhile on the women’s side world number one Simona Halep will get an opportunity to gain revenge over Kaia Kanepi when they meet again in the first round.

Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, who claimed her first major title by beating Halep in the final of the Australian Open last year, will start the defence of her title against Alison van Uyt-vanck of Belgium.

Third seed Wozniacki is in the bottom half of the draw along with Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, who will take on Polona Hercog in round one.

Serena Williams, the 16th seed, will take on Tatjana Maria in her first match of the tournament.

While fourth seed and us open champion Naomi Osaka starts her bid to claim back-to-back grand slam titles against polish outsider Magda Linette.
