by March 25th, 2022

Education Minister, Fayval Williams says the Ministry will be conducting an audit of metal detectors in schools come Monday (March 28).

The audit is to ensure that schools are equipped with the devices to detect weapons that may be used to cause harm during disputes.

Earlier this week, two students were stabbed, one of them fatally at the William Knibb High School in Trelawny and the other at the Excelsior High School in Kingston.

Khamal Hall, the student who was stabbed at the William Knibb high school died, while the student who was wounded at the Excelsior High School was hospitalized in serious condition.

A number of weapons have also been confiscated from students since the full resumption of face-to-face classes.

Speaking at a ‘Safety in Schools’ press briefing this morning (March 25), Mrs. Williams said while the metal detectors will not solve all the problems, they will help to detect weapons and possibly save lives.

Mrs. Williams said students from whom weapons are taken will be referred for counselling.
