Thompson-Herah nominated for Laureus Sports Woman Of the year award

Jamaica’s two time Olympic sprint double Champion and reigning World Female Athlete of the year Elaine Thompson Herah has been named among the nominees for the Laureus Sportswoman of the year award.

Thompson Herah became the first woman in Olympic history to repeat as sprint double champion doing so at the Tokyo games in Japan – she was also part of the Jamaican sprint relay gold medal winning team.

Thompson Herah went on to clock a world-leading time of 10.54 seconds at a Diamond League event in August in Oregon to affirm her title – she was just 0.05 seconds shy of the women’s 100m record of 10.49 set by American Florence Griffith Joyner.

The 10.54 marked a new personal best for the fastest woman alive and a new meet record – she capped off the season by winning the diamond trophy.

Other nominees for the category are world number one tennis player Asleigh Barty, athletics’ Allyson Felix, swimming’s Katie Ledecky, from the US, and Australia’s Emma Mckeon, and Ballon d’or winner Alexia Putellas.

Meanwhile, Thompson-Herah says she felt great at her 2022 season opener at the 20th staging of the Queens Grace Jackson development meet on the weekend at Stadium east.

The female World Athlete of the year opened with a 7.19 seconds clocking over 60 meters against an unfavorable 1.9 meter per second wind reading.

Thompson-Herah was challenged early by Shashalee Forbes of Sprintec but pulled away midway for a comfortable win.

Remona Burchell, also of Sprintec, closed fast to finish second in 7.29, while Forbes had to settle for third in 7.36.

It was Thompson-Herah’s first 60 meters race since 2019 when she ran 7.24 seconds at the same meet.

Thompson Herah told Irie FM sports that she has moved on from her previous association with the MVP track club and her preparations has been satisfactory so far.

The Jamaican Sportswoman of the year is set to compete over 60 meters at the Indoor Grand Prix series n Birmingham on February 19.
