Dancehall deejay Spice is the latest entertainer to weigh in following the controversial Supreme court ruling last Friday in support of a child with dreadlocks who was denied her right to an education because of her hair.

Spice in her Instagram post said in part, “I’ve noticed over the years that the Jamaican system is not proud of our roots and culture. Anything that we are known and loved for the system fight against it. Rastafarianism is apart of who we are as a nation. Bob Marley is the biggest icon and tourist symbol that made our country known across the world through rasta love.”

Spice further stated, “Equal Rights and Justice, Emancipate yourself from Mental Slavery. To deny a child the right to an education because of their hairstyle choice is utter nonsense.”

Spice who did a song about ‘Black Hypocrisy’ wrote, “This is discrimination at its highest form. I have spoken about black hypocrisy and people thought it was just about skin colour in Jamaica.”

Other entertainers who voiced strong messages via social media are Agent Sasco, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, and Tarrus Riley.

Meanwhile, according to Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, “Our children must not be discriminated against, or deprived of their right to an education on the basis of their hairstyle.”

The PM said Government is awaiting a written judgement to determine the basis of the ruling issued by the country’s highest court.

The Jamaican justice system has been met with heavy criticisms after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a school that denied a then five-year-old girl her right to an education because she has dreadlocks.

The child was told she must cut her dreadlocks for “hygiene” reasons to study at Kensington Primary School in Kingston.

The little girl’s parents, Dale and Sherine Virgo, whom both wear dreadlocks, plan to appeal the ruling.
