The West Indies, despite a whirlwind century by Chris Gayle went down by six wickets in the first One Day International against England at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

The Windies dropped 5 catches and with centuries by Jason Roy and Joe Root the visitors chased down a target of 361 to win with 8 deliveries to spare.

Root made 102 from 96 balls while Roy led the way with a 123 from just 85 balls. Captain Eoin Morgan, who added 65 from 51, also got among the runs.

Skipper Jason Holder (2-63) was the top Windies bowler while there was one each for Devendra Bishoo and Oshane Thomas.

Earlier Gayle marked his return to Windies colours by slamming 135 from 129 balls as the hosts made a competitive 360 for 3, which included a world record 23 sixes – the most sixes ever hit by a team in a single innings in an ODI.

Gayle, whose knock included 3 fours and 12 sixes, now holds the record for most sixes in international cricket by any player with 488. He also holds the record for most sixes by a single West Indian in an ODI match.

The left-hander put on 131 for the second wicket with Shai Hope who made 64 before bringing up his 24th ODI century with a single off Chris Woakes.

Darren Bravo (40), John Campbell (30) and Ashley Nurse who made 25 not out were the other leading contributors with the bat.

Ben Stokes (3-37) and Adil Rashid (3-74) were the pick of the England bowlers.

Final scores: West Indies 360 for 8, England 364 for 4.

The second game in the five-match series will be played on Friday also in Barbados.
