Federer & Murray advance, Nadal stunned

Defending champion Andy Murray is still on course to win back to back Wimbledon titles after coasting to a 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Frenchman Benoit Paire to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles event.

Next up for Murray is the 24th seeded American Sam Querrey.

Joining the Briton in the next round was Roger Federer who kept his quest for a record eighth Wimbledon crown on track, dispatching Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-2 6-4 in a match-up of classic styles.

Spain’s Rafael Nadal was the biggest casualty of the day after he was outlasted by Gilles Muller in a five-set marathon.

After winning the first two sets, the 16th-seeded Muller held on to beat the fourth-seeded Nadal, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 15-13 in a match that lasted 4 hours, 48 minutes.

Also making progress on the day were Tomas Berdych and Marin Cilic.

Over in the women’s draw, Germany’s Angelique Kerber will lose her hold on the number one ranking after she was knocked out by Spanish 14th seed Garbine Muguruza 4-6 ,6-4, 6-4.

Simona Halep could now take the world number one crown if she reaches the semi-finals. The Romanian beat Victoria Azarenka to move into the quarters, where she will face Britain’s Johanna Konta.

There were also wins for Venus Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
