Finance Minister rationalizes decision to provide assistance to PPV operators and not private drivers; those who needs it most should benefit

by March 28th, 2022

Amidst an increase in gas prices, Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke has sought to rationalize the Government’s decision to provide assistance to operators of Public Passenger Vehicles (PPVs) and not private drivers.

Last week, Dr Clarke announced that PPV operators will be getting fuel vouchers valued at twenty-five thousand dollars from the Government to cushion the effect of the high gas prices. No such assistance has been announced for private motor vehicle operators, unlike in Barbados, where the Government has announced a cap on the prices of gas and diesel to ensure affordability for all citizens.

Responding to questions during a recent interview, Dr. Clarke explained that the Government has to be strategic with the measures implemented to ensure those who are most needy benefit.
