Fire Brigade takes preliminary steps to have dialogue regarding shift arrangements for firefighters

by May 3rd, 2022

The Jamaica Fire Brigade says it has taken preliminary steps to have dialogue regarding shift arrangements for firefighters.

The issue has been a sore point among fire fighters, who are calling for the retention of the 24 hour shift system, implemented under the Disaster Risk Management Act, DRMA during the early stage of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Firefighters say the regular shift system has them working across shifts which sees them working everyday with little time for family and other business.

They state that under the 24 hour system, they work for 24 hours and get 48 hours off.

When contacted by Irie Fm News, Public Relations Officer for the Fire Brigade, Emeleo Ebanks says the shifts are stated in the law and cannot be unilaterally changed by the brigade.

He says the brigade is not opposed to the 24 hour shift.
