Fire damages classroom at St Mary High school

Several students and staff at the St. Mary High School in Highgate got a slight scare this afternoon (Apl 20) after a classroom with a smart board was engulfed by flames.

The fire which was confined to a classroom on the grade nine block, reportedly started sometime before three o’clock.

The students were quickly evacuated and fire personnel were called to the scene.

Speaking with Irie FM News, one of the schools Vice Principals Dawnette Lewis explains what unfolded.

Mrs. Lewis says the cause of the fire is not yet known. She is thankful no one was hurt.

She says as a result of the fire, after school activities were cancelled for today.

In the meantime, the school’s Principal, Juliet Frazer-Sadaar says come next Monday efforts will be made to accommodate dislocated teachers and students as best as possible.

The estimated cost of damage has not yet been ascertained.
