Flash Flood Warning Continued As Tropical Storm Ida Forms South Of The Island

by August 26th, 2021

Jamaica is under a flash flood warning as tropical storm Ida forms southwest of the island. The warning for all parishes is in effect until 5 PM tomorrow (August 27).

A flash flood warning means flooding has been reported or will occur shortly. Motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to cross flooded roadways or other low-lying areas as strong currents are likely. Residents in low-lying areas should be on the alert for rising waters and be ready to move quickly to higher ground.

At 4:20 PM, the centre of tropical storm Ida was located about 160 kilometres west-southwest of Negril, Jamaica.

Tropical storm Ida is moving toward the northwest near 22 km/h, and this general motion should continue over the next few days.  On the forecast track, the centre of the storm will pass near or over the Cayman Islands tonight, the Isle of Youth and western Cuba Friday, and over the south-eastern and central Gulf of Mexico Friday night and Saturday.  The system is forecast to approach the US northern gulf coast on Sunday.

Observational data indicate that light to moderate and at times heavy showers and thunderstorms have been affecting sections of most parishes, especially eastern and central parishes, throughout the day.

The forecast is for widespread showers and thunderstorms to continue across most parishes into Friday with rainfall accumulation of 150-250mm (6-10 inches). Strong gusty winds are also expected in the vicinity of thunderstorms and over hilly terrain. Flash flooding is expected to occur over low-lying and flood-prone areas of all parishes.

Marine operators are advised to remain in safe harbour until all warning messages have been lifted and sea conditions have returned to normal.
