Flood affected St. Ann residents appeal for help

by January 7th, 2018

A resident of Discovery Bay, St. Ann is appealing to the authorities for assistance after her home was flooded for the second time, in as many days.

Sheryl King told Irie Fm news that her home and several others in the Top Bay District, were flooded last Thursday, following heavy rains.

She says heavy rains last night (Jan 6), again left her home inundated.

Furniture, appliance, and clothing are among the items that have been damaged by the flood.

Ms. King is appealing to the Labour Ministry to provide aid to affected residents, as well as to the National Works Agency to rectify whatever blockage is causing the repeated flooding.

Meantime, a resident of Salem in St. Ann is calling for a barrier along the North Coast highway, in the vicinity of the traffic light, to either be removed or modified to allow the free flow of flood water.

Marcia Patterson told Irie FM News that since last Thursday, constant rains left the area where her home is located covered in water.

The land behind her home is a swamp area, and in years past whenever it rains heavily the water would rise, but eventfully run off, to the sea.

However, because of the barrier, and blocked drains, the flood water is not able to run off, and the continued rainfall has resulted in the continued rise of the water level, leaving her home completely surrounded.

Ms. Patterson says she did not sleep last night, due to worrying about her home being flooded.

She says the Councillor for the division and the Mayor, have visited and have promised to get in touch with the owner of the swamp property, in a bid to have the matter rectified.
