The Foreign Affairs Ministry says despite signals of a de-escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine, the government continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine.

There are fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, as Russian troops were reportedly gathered at the border shared by the two countries.

However, the troops have started to withdraw and Russian President Vladimir Putin says Russia does not want war in Europe, but that his security concerns must be addressed and taken seriously.

In a Twitter post today (February 15), Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Johnson Smith in noting the signs of de-escalation, gave an update on some 42 Jamaican students studying in Ukraine.

Mrs. Johnson Smith said her ministry continues to engage with the students.

She said 5 have left or are in the process of leaving and 7 have requested assistance to return, 3 of whom are now reconsidering.

She said the others are still considering their options.

The Foreign Affairs Minister added that the embassy has written to 3 universities which most of the students attend.

She said two of the universities have confirmed that they will allow online classes until April 1, while the third still holds classes in person, but said it would consider adjustments.

The Foreign Ministry said it will continue to monitor the situation.
