Peoples National Party President Dr. Peter Phillips has hailed the late Easton Douglas, as a giant in the process of nation-building, a man who was a champion patriot and epitomized the true spirit of Jamaican nationhood.

Douglas died this morning after a brief illness.

Dr. Phillips said Douglas had a long and distinguished career in both the private and public sector, citing his service as a land surveyor and urban planner, as well as in the civil service and as a political executive.

Douglas was elected Member of Parliament for South East St. Andrew in 1989 and served the constituents faithfully until he retired from parliament in 2002.

Dr. Phillips said Douglas’ service to the party was exemplary and his work as vice president for many years assisted in the building of the election machinery.

He expressed condolences to Douglas’ family, especially his daughter, Kari who now serves as councillor for the Trafalgar division.

Meantime, former Party President Portia Simpson Miller said Douglas contribution to Jamaica’s development, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, physical and urban planning and housing, could be equalled but never surpassed.

Simpson Miller, who was a Cabinet colleague of Douglas for over a decade, said his contributions to government and party were brilliant because of the commitment and the principles he brought to his duties as a minister of government.

She hailed Douglas as her mentor and friend, who was the chairman of her campaign team when she sought the leadership of the People’s National Party.

And, Prime Minister Andrew Holness has described the late Easton Douglas, as a passionate public servant.

Mr. Douglas, a former minister of housing and health in the 1990’s died this morning after a period of illness. He was 81 years old.

In paying tribute, the Prime Minister said Mr. Douglas served Jamaica with honour and dedication.

Mr. Holness said Douglas legacy is one of sacrifice, dedication and service to the development of Jamaica and its people.

Mr. Douglas also served in the capacities of Member of Parliament for south east St. Andrew, permanent secretary, government town planner and chairman of the National Housing Trust. He was also a business owner.

Mr. Holness said despite political differences, Douglas passion to see the development of Jamaica always stood out as one of his most endearing traits.
