Former Lucea mayor to appear before PNP’s integrity commission

by May 15th, 2015

Embattled former Mayor of Lucea, Shernet Haughton is expected to appear before the integrity commission of the People’s National Party today.

She will face the commission arising from an investigation conducted by the Office of the Contractor General, into the award of several contracts at the Hanover parish council.

The OCG says there was nepotism on the part of Haughton.

The former mayor was accused of facilitating the award of millions of dollars in contracts from the Hanover parish council to members of her family and close friends.

The director of public prosecutions ruled that no criminal prosecution could be mounted against Haughton.

However, it was recommended that strong administrative action or sanctions be taken against her by the relevant policy makers or authority, which has ultimate responsibility for parish councils.

One of the attorneys representing Haughton, Delford Morgan, told Irie FM News that Leonard Greene will be the senior lawyer appearing on behalf of Haughton.

The PNP says following Haughton’s appearance, the commission will make recommendations to the party’s National Executive Council (NEC), through the president and a decision will be made.

Haughton has maintained her innocence and has rejected calls to resign as councillor for the green island division.
