Former pacer Vasbert Drakes join Windies coaching set-up for England series

by January 21st, 2019

Former West Indies allrounder Vasbert Drakes has been named as one of three assistant coaches for the upcoming Test series against England.

Drakes, who played 12 Tests and 34 One Day Internationals between 1995 and 2004, was the head coach of the West Indies Women when they won the World T20 title in India in 2016 – a tournament that was  overseen  by  now  interim head coach Richard Pybus in his role as Windies director of cricket.

“It is an honour to be back working with West Indies cricket again,” said Drakes. “As someone who played the game at the highest level, it has always been my wish to contribute to West Indies cricket and give back to the young players.

The 49 year old will be working alongside the former Guyana allrounder Esuan Crandon and the former Middlesex and Sussex batsman Toby Radford, who was the men’s assistant coach during the World T20 in 2012 that ended in silverware for the Windies men’s team.

Crandon, who led the Guyana Jaguars to four consecutive Regional First-class titles, will complete the coaching set-up alongside the former Pakistani spinner Mushtaq Ahmed, who will continue in his role as spin bowling consultant.

The first Test gets underway at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Wednesday.
