Funeral date announced for late JFF president Captain Horace Burrell

The funeral service for late Jamaica Football Federation president Captain Horace Burrell will be held at the National Arena on June 28.

The announcement was made today by the Minister of  Culture, gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange.

Minister Grange who was speaking in parliament said the “Country owes Captain Burrell a huge debt of gratitude for his work.

“In this regard, I am pleased to announce that Captain Burrell’s family will have one hundred percent support from the Government and from my Ministry to assist in planning his funeral.

“A committee has been established which includes the JFF, the staff of the Ministry of Sports, and his family to make those arrangements.”

Proceedings are set to begin at 10am with a tribute concert followed by a service of thanksgiving, in keeping with the family’s wish for a celebratory event.

Interment will be at Up Park Camp.

Burrell, who had been ailing for the past year, passed away last week Tuesday at the John Hopkins Oncology Centre in Baltimore after losing his battle with cancer.

He was 67.

At the time of his death, Burrell remained active in his companies as CEO and founder of both Captain’s Bakery and Captain’s Aviation Service.

In 1998, he received Jamaica’s fourth highest national honor, the Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD); he also received the highest award, Order of Merit. Burrell became a Captain in the local army, Jamaica Defence Force.

The Captain served two stints as president of the Jamaica Football Federation: first, from 1994 to 2003 and then from 2007 until the time of his death. He also, over the span of his career, occupied several executive positions with various sporting bodies; CONCACAF, the CFU, FIFA Disciplinary Committee and the Jamaica Olympic Association.
