Gold medals for Fedrick Dacres & Danniel Thomas-Dodd at Commonwealth Games

Jamaica has secured another seven medals on todays penultimate day of competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia‘s Gold Coast.

This includes two gold medals courtesy of Fedrick Dacres and Danniel Thomas-Dodd, 2 silver and 3 bronze to take the overall tally to 22 (6 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze).

Dacres led a Jamaican one-two in the men’s discuss where he produced a Commonwealth Games record 68.20m on his way to capturing the gold medal.

His compatriot Travis Smikle claimed the silver medal with a best effort of 63.98m.

Daniel Thomas-Dodd was also in gold medal form and registered a national record and personal best 19.36 metres to win the women’s shot put final.

On the track, 2015 world champion Danielle Williams stepped up to take the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles. She clocked 12.78s while former world youth champion Yanique Thompson claimed the bronze in 12.97 seconds.

The gold medal was won by Oluwatobiloba Amusan in 12.68s with Megan Simmonds – the other Jamaican in the race – finishing down the track in 7th place in 13.18 seconds.

Natoya Goule in the meantime produced a personal best 1:58.82 seconds to land the bronze medal in the women’s 800m that was won by South African Caster Semenya in a games record 1:56.68 seconds.

Para-athlete Tevaughn Thomas meanwhile was third in the men’s T-47 100m final to claim the bronze medal. He was timed at 11.63s.

Earlier the men’s 4×100 and 4×400 metre relay teams booked their place in the final of both events.

The men’s 4×100 team was second in their heat in 38.44s behind England (38.15s).

The 4x400m team meanwhile won their heat in 3:03.97 seconds.

The Jamaican team, which sits 11th overall, is second on the medal table for athletics with 21. Hosts Australia lead the way with 28 medals.
