Golding threatens to take gov’t to court if local gov’t elections are postponed again

by June 19th, 2023

Opposition Leader Mark Golding has threatened to take the government to court if it postpones local government elections for a fourth time.

The local government elections which are constitutionally due every four years were last held in November 2016.

They were postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic and later because the government said it did not have adequate funds to cover the cost of holding the elections.

The elections will become due on February 28, 2024.

Speaking at a Divisional Conference in St. Ann’s Bay last night, Mr. Golding noted that if the elections are further postponed, the terms of existing councilors would be extended by 100 per cent.
