Government allocates one billion dollars for road works

by November 17th, 2020

The government has allocated one billion dollars to rehabilitate some of the worst road conditions across the island, following recent flood rains connected to two storm systems.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said despite operating in a tight fiscal space the government had to respond.  The funds are being made available at both the national and constituency levels to each member of parliament.

Mr. Holness said the one billion dollars has been allocated through the National Works Agency to be spent in very specific ways on improving driving conditions on some of the worst affected roadways.

He explained that 7 million of the 15 million dollars must be spent on patching of roads and MPs do not have the option of spending less on this area. Mr. Holness said the MPs must collaborate with the NWA in selecting roads for repair which should include those causing severe inconvenience to residents.

The Prime Minister said he had instructed the Works Agency to start now,  to mobilize for the cleaning of critical drains and gullies.

Mr. Holness gave a breakdown of how the money will be spent.
