Government approves appointment of nurses

Government has followed through on its promise to guarantee permanent employment of some fifteen hundred temporary nurses.

 

The Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) says it received confirmation on December 9, that one thousand five hundred and nine nurses will receive permanent appointments.

 

The agreement between the parties was for one thousand five hundred and seventy-two nurses to be given security of tenure.

 

President of the NAJ Carmen Johnson says the association will be seeking to hold discussions with the government on the outstanding sixty-three posts.

 

She says, performance evaluation reviews are being conducted at the various health institutions, before the appointments are made.

 

 

The permanent post numbers was an item agreed on, between the Finance Ministry and the NAJ under the 2017/2019 heads of agreement.

 

Ms. Johnson says nurses have welcomed the long-awaited item.

 

 

There are some two thousand, seven hundred nurses in the public health system.

 

The NAJ President says the association is hopeful that this number will be increased by January, from the cohort of student nurses who have completed the regional examination.
