Government To Address Soak-Away Pits

Acting President of the National Water Commission, Mark Barnett, says the agency will be dealing with soak-away pits on properties, to clean up aquifers.

He says the NWC will be advocating to force people to connect to a central sewage system for the overall health of the environment.

Mr Barnett says, one of the richest aquifers in Jamaica, the Liguanea plains is being underutilised, due to the pollution from sewage.

He says this is water that could be tapped into and used for domestic purposes.

 

He adds that there have been improvements in getting people to connect to the central sewage system in Kingston.

 

Mr Barnett was speaking following the signing of a $12 million project, to rehabilitate and decommission some waste water systems in the country, to better improve aquifers and water quality.
