by April 27th, 2018

The government is making headway in digitizing the traffic ticketing system as this is a key feature, of the new Road Traffic Act.

Senate opened the debate, on the Road Traffic Act 2018 this morning, to change the current road traffic act.

The present Road Traffic Act was passed in 1938.

Opening the debate, Leader of Government Business in the Upper House, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, stated that an electronic traffic ticket system, will become a reality.

She explains, that there is a high rate of evasion by some road users, and some tickets, become lost in the system.

Mrs. Johnson smith notes that digitizing the system will aid in addressing evasion.

She highlights, that with a digital system, the enforcement process will be improved.

She states, that the new road traffic act will place the responsibility on the owners of motor vehicles.

Members of the senate are expected to debate the 2018 road traffic act, in the next sitting of Senate.

Renewing drivers licences, motor vehicle licences and motor vehicle fitness will not be possible if the driver has unpaid traffic tickets.

This is a clause contained in the new road traffic act.

Johnson Smith explained that this new road traffic act targets those who continue to neglect paying outstanding fines.

She says perpetual traffic offenders will no longer be given the choice to pay outstanding tickets whenever there is an amnesty.

In the meantime, Mrs. Johnson smith explains that the new road traffic act states that a driver should have his or her drivers licences on his or her person at all times when driving.

She explains that this will not only ensure that the right information is provided to the police in the event of a road code violation, but it will also aim in addressing crime.

She notes that the true identity of a wanted person will be provided to the police, who will confirm the information by doing checks, thus enabling an arrest.
