by September 26th, 2017

The government has spent $50 m to airlift back home 200 Jamaicans who were impacted by recent hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The last of the airlifts occurred yesterday.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says Jamaica has provided support to nationals living in the eastern Caribbean. He says the two hundred people wanted to return home.

Others decided to remain in the respective countries to rebuild.

Mr. Holness told parliament that government will be donating US $200,000 to the two worst affected countries.

The Prime Minister says the government will look into the possibility of assisting Dominica with infrastructure works.

Mr. Holness adds that the private sector and individual Jamaicans have also provided invaluable assistance to the territories, impacted by the hurricanes.

He says about 160 people died as a result of the hurricanes, with damage in the Caribbean, Mexico and the United States, being more than US $100.

Meantime, members of the Jamaica Defence Force have begun arriving in Dominica, to provide assistance to the hurricane battered island.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says in keeping with the commitment to Dominica, the 120-man strong disaster assistance response team (DART) is being deployed in three phases.

Mr. Holness in updating parliament on Jamaica’s role in the recovery efforts to countries in the region says he spoke with Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skeritt on the weekend.

He states that Prime Minister Skeritt made a formal request for assistance.

The JDF team will among other things assist with security and distribution of relief supplies.

He says Jamaica has also committed to supporting the Dominican government  with  a four-man technical and advisory support team, led by Colonel Jamie O’Gilvie, as they seek to restore the integrity of their national security systems, and plan for the recovery and rebuilding of their nation.

Meantime, members of the JDF were also deployed as part of the Caricom disaster response unit, to provide immediate relief in Tortola -part of the British Virgin Islands- in the aftermath of hurricane Irma.

Mr. Holness says these members will remain in the BVI working tirelessly on behalf of Jamaica and Caricom.
