Classes at the Haile Selassie High School on Spanish Town Road in Kingston will resume tomorrow (Mar 8).

The school closed early today, due to the presence of noxious fumes   at the institution.

Principal Lorenzo Ellis says about 6 o’clock this morning, there was smoke at the institution.

A statement from the Health Ministry says staff and students began to complain of chest pains and headaches, while some with asthmatic and sinus conditions, experienced complications.

One teacher was taken to hospital, after having difficulty breathing.

Following consultations with the school board and education officer, it was decided, that the school be closed early at 8:39 a.m. to protect staff and students.

Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid says the school made an immediate request of the Kingston and St. Andrew public health department, to do a site visit to investigate the possible causes, and conduct an air quality test.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for St. Andrew Western Anthony Hylton says he is awaiting a report into the illegal fire.

Mr. Hylton says this among other things will be discussed at a stakeholders meeting tomorrow.

Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) Audley Gordon confirmed that the landfill located in Riverton was not the cause of the fire.
