Health & Education Ministries give conflicting statements on HPV vaccine initiative

by October 3rd, 2017

There is some confusion about the status of the human papilloma virus vaccination programme being rolled out by the health ministry in schools.

Today (Oct 30) Education Minister Ruel Reid said the programme was being pulled back to allow for sensitization of the public.

However, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton who spoke on the vaccine in parliament this afternoon made no mention of a suspension of the programme.

The controversial programme which targets grade seven girls began yesterday.

Parents and some school administrators have said they do not have sufficient information about the vaccine to be administered to the girls.

Mr. Reid commented on the plans to put a hold on the programme at a press conference this afternoon.

Meantime, a statement from  the Health Ministry following  the Education Ministry’s  press conference said the programme would be continued, but with due care.

The Health Ministry says its ensuring that it works with the ministry of education and other stakeholders, so that there is adequate information to parents, guardians and students.

The ministry says this may result in delays from the original schedule for a school, but where this is in place, the programme will proceed.

The initiative is expected to cost one hundred million dollars in the first year.
